The Arizona Department of Education adopted the arts standards in 1996. In the summer of 2005, a committee of dance educators were selected to review and rewrite the dance standards in an attempt to make them more accessible and practical for all dance teachers in the state. In addition to being used in the dance classroom, the standards are also used by regular classroom teachers when incorporating the arts into their academic lessons. The process of revision included: an analysis of the current standards; their effectiveness, practicality and overall usability by all teachers; a decision to change the overall structure and organization; a breakdown of the actual standards into what was crucial and what was not; and finally, the inclusion of topics that were previously overlooked. The new version of the standards will be reviewed by teachers and administrators around the country and will be submitted to the Arizona Board of Education in the summer of 2006 for approval.
